‘Ōlulu

NAME:

Hawaiian:     ‘Ōlulu, pū aupaka

English:

Latin:            Brighamia insignis

FAMILY:      Campanulaceae

STATUS:    Endemic, very rare

APPEARANCE:

An unbranched stem succulent 1-5m tall. Grows from shoreline to 400 meter elevation on rocky cliffs.  After 300 meter elevation the plant prefers either the dry side of islands to grow on or in a greenhouse.  Very susceptible to fungus from too much moisture.

Flower: Small, 7 to 14cm long trumpet like star tubular flowers yellow in color and changing to white with age.

Leaves: The leaves are 12 to 20cm long and 6.5 to 11cm wide, medium green in color.
